Best pets, levels 10 to 20

Ten worth the walk.

The beta caps at 20 for now, so these are the pets you can actually get. We ranked on attack speed first and the family ability second. Looks broke ties. Swing speeds come from beta testers where one was posted, and from Classic otherwise.

Best leveling pets

Level with a pet that pulls its weight.

Your pet does most of the tanking from 10 to 20. Here is the best one to tame in each starting zone, the upgrades worth a detour, and how to tame them.

What to look for

  1. 01

    A swing under 2.0

Target the beast and check its attack speed before you tame. Most starting zones have something at 1.3 to 1.5, and a 1.3 pet hits about half again as often as a 2.0 one.

  2. 02

    Abilities it already knows

A beast that comes with Bite 2 or Claw 2 saves you hunting down a teacher. Pick it over an identical one that knows nothing.

  3. 03

    Close to your level

As in Classic, a pet tamed below your level has to earn experience to catch up. A level 6 cat spends its first hour weaker than a level 9 wolf.

  4. 04

    The right family ability

Bears hold groups with Swipe, spiders root with Web, hyenas slow with Tendon Rip, wolves buff the party with Furious Howl. Pick for how you play.

  5. 05

    Food you already carry

An unhappy pet does less damage. Bears and boars eat anything, so they never send you back to a vendor.

Your first pet at 10

Common beasts you can count on finding, with a backup for when the first one is taken. The rares beat all of these if you can camp them, and they are on the rares page.

How to tame one

The short version for your first tame. The taming guide has the rest.

Fastest beasts up to 20
  1. 1

    Get Tame Beast at 10

In Classic this was a short quest from your class trainer at 10. Testers report pets arrive at 10 in Forever the same way.

  2. 2

    Check the swing first

Target the beast and look at its attack speed. 2.0 is normal. Anything lower hits more often, and it stays that way after the tame.

  3. 3

Tame up to two levels above you

Testers tamed the level 12 Coldrasp at 10. It stays 12, so it will out-level you for a while.

  4. 4

    Dismiss, then tame

You can only have one pet out. Dismiss the old one first, or stable it if you want to keep it.

  5. 5

    Buy its food

Check the family diet before you leave town. Bears and boars eat anything, turtles eat raw fish, tallstriders only eat cheese, fungus or fruit.
