Taming guide

How taming works in Forever.

Short version: you get Tame Beast at 10, you can tame a little above your level, and your pet keeps up with you all the way to 60. Longer version below.

The rules

  1. 1

You get your pet at 10

Same as Classic. Until then you have auto shot, plus Raptor Strike when something reaches you.

  2. 2

You can tame two levels up

Testers say this is on purpose. Coldrasp is 12 and hunters tame him at 10. He stays 12. One report has a level 20 hunter taming a 21 scorpid while a 22 refused, so do not count on it for every beast yet.

  3. 3

    Pets scale with you

Every point of your Stamina gives the pet 2 health. It gets 30% of your armor, 10% of your attack power and all of your crit chance. Late game pets should stop falling behind.

  4. 4

    Attack speed is per beast

The base is 2.0, but single creatures can carry passives like Faster Attack 6 (+67%) or Slower Attack II (-20%). Two wolves from the same pack can swing at very different speeds. Check the pet's attack speed before you tame.

  5. 5

Abilities still come from other beasts

Training points and ranks are still here. You learn a rank by taming a beast that knows it, then teach it to anything in a family that can use it. Claw 3 needs pet level 16, for example.

  6. 6

    Feed it

Happiness and loyalty are still in. Every family has a diet. Bears and boars eat everything, and turtles take raw fish.

Attack speed

Pets start at a 2.0 swing. Some single beasts carry a passive that changes it, and you can see it on the beast before you tame. Hover it or check its attack stats after the tame. A faster swing means more damage and more focus spent on Bite or Claw.

These are the passives testers have found so far.

  • Faster Attack 6+67%Rake (Mulgore), Slavering Worg (Shadowfang Keep), both at 1.2
  • Faster Attack 5+54%A tester's tallstrider
  • Faster Attack 3+33%Coldrasp, at 1.5
  • Increased Attackspeed 2+25%Mystmane, at 1.6
  • Slower Attack II-20%Urs'anah, a bear on Zephras Isle

To find fast beasts near you, open the tame finder sorted by swing speed.

Training abilities

This works the way it did in Classic. Tame a beast that knows the ability, use it for a while and you learn it. Then open Beast Training on any pet whose family can use it and spend training points to teach it.

Pet level gates the rank. Claw 3 needs a level 16 pet, for example. If you tame something that already knows a rank above its level, the beta currently strips it when you dismiss the pet or log out.

Family abilities are the exception. Swipe stays with bears, Savage Rend with raptors and so on. See every one on the abilities page.

What each family eats

A hungry pet loses happiness, and an unhappy pet does less damage. Carry food it likes.

Beta bugs

Known problems as of 26 September. Expect these to get fixed, but plan around them for now.

  • Shadowgale Shriekling

A raptor listed as a Bird of Prey. Loses Savage Rend 1 when dismissed or on logout and cannot learn Bird of Prey abilities.

  • Shadowgale Ursera

Tameable at 11 but comes with Claw 3, which needs 16. Tame it early and it loses Claw 3 on dismiss or logout.

  • Ornery Galestrider

Loses Dust Cloud 1 on dismiss or logout.

  • Vuldren foxes

Cannot be taught through Beast Training. Slydris only shows Bite 2.

  • Nightscreech

    Cannot learn Screech.
